Donate Materials

The next day Book Collection Day will be held on Saturday, January 8 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Green Tree Public Library accepts donations of gently-used books and other materials on the first Saturday of most months between the hours of 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. On Book Donation Drop-Off Days, volunteers will be on hand to help receive and sort through the used items. Please bring donations in small boxes or bags that can be easily carried. Collecting and organizing these materials takes a great deal of time and effort; therefore the library is unable to accept donations at times other than the designated Book Donation Drop-Off Days.

What kinds of donations does the library accept?

To keep standards high for library patrons, the library accepts books and multimedia items that are in good condition. Cookbooks, works of fiction (especially mysteries) and nonfiction (especially historical), paperbacks, children’s books, CDs and DVDs are greatly appreciated.

What kinds of donations is the library unable to accept?

Although we appreciate the support, the library cannot accept reference books (such as encyclopedia sets), large dictionaries, Readers Digest condensed books, textbooks older than five years, cookbooks older than five years, computer books older than two years, dated publications (such as tax guides), magazines, VHS tapes and self-recorded videos. Also, the library cannot accept materials in poor condition including: materials with torn pages or excessively worn covers; materials with yellowed, brittle pages or damaged binding; dirty or dusty items; stained, water damaged or mildewed items; materials with excessive notes or highlighting; or scratched or worn media.

What does the library do with donations?

The majority of donated items are sold at the annual used book sale, which takes place every autumn and benefits the library. Materials unsold at the book sale are distributed to local charities and organizations. All donations become the property of the library. Because of limitations of space, money and staff, the library does reserve the right to accept and discard, at its discretion, any donated materials. Donated materials cannot be returned to the donor.

May I receive proof of my donation for tax purposes?

Yes. Upon request, a receipt may be obtained at the time of donation. However, by law, library staff and volunteers cannot determine the value of a donation for IRS purposes.
