Van Gogh and the Sunflowers: A Story about Vincent Van Gogh is a beautifully illustrated book that introduces young readers to one of the most influential artists of all time. The well-known children’s author, Laurence Anholt, skillfully weaves stories about a family who befriends Vincent Van Gogh around some of his most famous paintings, including Starry Night and Sunflowers.
Although a somewhat joyful telling, the narrative does not shy away from some of the more troubling aspects of the artist’s life. It details his struggles to fit into the town and with its people. Even the town’s children are unkind to Vincent and to the loving family, who treats him with such kindness. However, the book does end happily noting how many people today enjoy and appreciate the wonderful artistry of this most famous painter.
