This new graphic novel format of the classic young adult novel is a masterful work. Lois Lowry’s Newbery medal winning book is heart wrenching and moving on it’s own, but artist P. Craig Russel’s illustrations add a haunting element that brings it to a whole new level. I read the whole book at my desk in one sitting because I couldn’t put it down. Existential dread rose up in the back of my throat as I joined Jonas on his journey of discovering the dark secrets of his seemingly perfect community. By the end of the book I was crying quietly at my desk and I remembered how much the book had moved me the first time I read it, some 20 years ago.
