In a small town near Tokyo, Osamu and his family live on his mother’s pension at her tiny old house. As the pension is not enough for the whole family, Osamu and his son Shota, habitually shoplift at a grocery store. Although they are far from being wealthy, they seem happy together. One cold day, Osamu and Shota find a girl shivering outside of an apartment on the way home. Osamu decides to take her home. When no one comes looking for the little girl, even Osamu’s wife decides to keep her as the newest member of the family.
Shoplifters was released in the summer of 2018. The film won the highest prize award, Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film. The director, Hirokazu Kore-eda began his career in documentary TV shows. Through the experience of documentary making, he began to see the bonds of family differently. Shoplifter is considered one of his finest works.
