Meet Nanea! She lives with her family on the island of Oahu, Hawaii in 1942. She loves helping in her grandparents’ store, learning how to hula dance and play music. But everything changes when Pearl Harbor is bombed and the United States enters World War II. In order to help her community Nanea embraces the spirit of Aloha and decides to help her family and friends anyway that she can.
Nanea, her book, a journal and other accessories are yours to borrow for one week. Pairing history with play, American Girl dolls aim to help foster a love of reading and curiosity about the past in young minds. Popular among young children for many years, American Girl is a name that stands for excellence, imagination, and learning. American Girl Historic dolls, their books, and lessons are aimed at children ages 8 and up.
How can you take Nanea home with you?
Anyone with a valid library card can take Nanea home for one week at a time. Nanea may not be renewed and she must be picked up and returned at Green Tree Public Library. If Nanea is already home with another library friend, we will be happy to place a hold on her for you. You’ll then be notified when Nanea is ready for her trip to your house!
What can I do with Nanea at my house?
Lots of things! Nanea will come with a book, a bed, a brush, and accessories! Nanea really wants you to read her book, play with her, and write about your adventures together in her special journal! When you take her home, you’ll also get a special notebook so that you can share your adventures with Nanea to everyone who takes her home! Write about how much you liked playing her, your thoughts about her book, or draw a picture of her and you together! When you write in the journal, you’ll be sharing your experience with Nanea with all of the other children who will take her home in the future! Just be sure to keep her away from water, take care of her belongings, and keep her clean.
And if you really like Nanea and want to learn more about her life during the 1940’s, we have her other books at the library for you to take home to read and enjoy.
What happens if I return Nanea late?
Nanea can stay at your house for one week. When she is returned late, you will be charged 50 cents per day. If Nanea is damaged or her kit is lost, patrons will be charged $175. Any minor damages or lost materials will be handled on a case-by-case basis with the children’s librarian. But we are positive that you’ll do a wonderful job of keeping Nanea clean and safe at your house!
