Spring is here and that means that Kennywood is open! There’s something for everyone to love at Kennywood, whether you’re a thrill seeker who loves roller coasters or the historic carousel is more your style. It’s well-known for its exciting rides, but did you know that Kennywood got its start as a trolley park? The Monongahela Street Railway Company leased the land from the Kenny family in 1898 and in the following years, a carousel, dance hall, and bandstand were added. A variety of rides followed and after a lease transfer in 1906, the park began operating as Kennywood Park Limited. Kennywood is one now one of the oldest traditional amusement parks in the country and draws visitors from all over the world. It’s been designated a U.S. National Historic Landmark and recently earned a Certified Autism Center designation.
With so much to love, it’s no wonder that many Pittsburghers have fond memories and stories to tell about their summers spent at the park! If you’d like to learn more about the history of Kennywood and relive some of your summer memories, check out these hidden gems in our catalog.
