Two years ago Green Tree Public Library began circulating American Girl Dolls as part of a pilot program through the Allegheny County Library Association. What all began with one doll, Molly, has grown to include 7 different American Girl dolls that highlight our rich American History. Young children in our community enjoy taking the dolls and their accessories home for play and learning! Each kit comes with a book about the doll’s life, a bed, and even a journal for children to share their experience and journeys with the doll. Thanks to our partnership with the Allegheny County Library Association and support from the Green Tree Woman’s Civic Club, our library’s collection has proven to be successful and the dolls are always in demand.
In celebration of our American Girl Doll’s collection second birthday, we are thrilled to announce that two new dolls will be joining their friends at Green Tree Public Library: Gabriela and Logan! Gabriela and Logan are our first dolls to be added to the collection that are not part of the Historic Doll collection. Instead, Gabriela and Logan celebrate what it’s like to be a kid in America today! Our goal with introducing these dolls to the library is to diversify our collection and to highlight the many unique ways children express their creativity, determination, talent, and compassion in America. We are fortunate to have a community with so many inspiring young people that adding dolls to reflect their experiences was a natural choice!
Let’s meet our newest editions!
Meet Gabriela! She’s a Pennsylvania Girl! Hailing from Philadelphia, Gabriela loves to dance! Hip Hop, Tap, and Ballet are her favorites and she dances them at her local community center! But even though Gabby is confident on the stage, she struggles with stuttering and speaking up can be scary. Gabby’s kit comes complete with a bed, dance and performance-inspired accessories, and a journal so that you can write about your adventures with her!
Meet Logan! Logan is one cool kid who loves playing musical instruments, especially the drums! He’s in a band with Teeney, one of his best friends! You can read about Logan, Teeney, and their band in the book included in his kit. Logan is the very first American Girl Doll released that’s actually a boy! His kit comes with a sleeping bag and a change of clothes plus a journal so that you can write about your visit with him!
So now that you know a little bit about our American Girl Collection, we’re sure you’re going to take one of these new dolls home soon! Here’s what you need to know about borrowing a doll!
Taking a doll home: Anyone with a valid library card can take an American Girl Doll home for one week at a time. Dolls may not be renewed and must be picked up and returned at Green Tree Public Library. If the doll of your choice is already home with another library friend, we will be happy to place a hold on him/her for you. You’ll then be notified when he/she is ready for the trip to your house!
What can I do with the dolls at my house: Lots of things! Our dolls come with a book, a bed, a brush, and accessories! We also have additional accessories like clothes and a jukebox, please be sure to ask a librarian for details on these too! When you take a doll home, you’ll also get a special notebook so that you can share your adventures with him/her to everyone who takes her home! Write about how much you liked playing them, your thoughts about their book, or draw a picture of the doll and you together! When you write in the journal, you’ll be sharing you experience with all of the other children who will take the doll home in the future! Just be sure to keep the doll away from water, take care of her belongings, and keep her clean.
What happens if I return a doll late: Dolls can stay at your house for one week. When she is returned late, you will be charged 50 cents per day. If a doll is damaged or her kit is lost, patrons will be charged $175. Any minor damages or lost materials will be handled on a case-by-case basis with the children’s librarian. But we are positive you’ll do a wonderful job of keeping the dolls clean and safe at your house!
Which American Girl Dolls are available at Green Tree Public Library: Green Tree Public Library has a total of nine American Girl Historic Dolls: Josefina, Molly, Julie, Kit, Caroline, Maryellen, Melody, Gabriela, and Logan!
