Pleasant Court in Melbourne is literally a very pleasant place to live. The neighbors are friendly, everyone knows each other and they sometimes have meetings to keep the neighborhood safe. For many, it is the perfect place to grow a family. Three mothers, Essie, Ange and Fran, live with their husband and children in Pleasant Court. They are neighbors and friends. One day, Pleasant Court gets a new neighbor, Isabella. Isabella is different; she is single and has no children. It doesn’t seem like she fits this family-oriented neighborhood. Essie, Ange and Fran are curious about her and wonder what has brought this young single woman to a place like Pleasant Court.
Author, Sally Hepworth started writing this book when she was pregnant. She edited it with a newborn at her side and spent a lot of time wondering what her neighbors were up to. Her own curiosities are reflected in this novel. How much do we know about our neighbors? Hepworth is quite successfully making readers suspicious about our neighbors. You might enjoy getting to know the people living in Pleasant Court, and this might make you think about who your own neighbors are.
If you like suburban suspense stories like Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty, The family next door would be the next book to read for you.
