Happy birthday to Andy Warhol, born on August 6, 1928! Best known as a key figure in the Pop Art movement, Andrew Warhola was born in Pittsburgh and graduated from the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now known as Carnegie Mellon University) with a degree in pictorial design. He began his career as a commercial artist in New York City, where he worked for companies such as Vogue, Glamour magazine, Tiffany & Co., and RCA Records.
In the 1960’s, Warhol joined the Pop Art movement. Pop artists challenged the idea of traditional art by taking inspiration from common, mass-produced objects and elevating them to the level of fine art. Campbell’s Soup cans and Coca-Cola bottles are just a few of the common items that often appear in his paintings. Andy Warhol was obsessed with celebrities and created numerous celebrity portraits; he was quoted as saying “In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes.” Later in his career, he moved beyond paintings and silkscreen prints and created films, short videos, and performance art. He even had his own show on MTV, briefly managed the band The Velvet Underground, and cofounded Interview magazine, which is still in circulation today. That’s an incredible range of accomplishments!
